A team that cannot repair a disagreement will route around it instead.

The cost shows up as slow decisions, information that stops moving, and eventually a resignation that surprises nobody who worked there.

What the research actually identified

Decades of observational work found that relationship breakdown is predicted by four specific interaction patterns rather than by the presence of conflict. Teams that argue are not the problem. Teams that criticise, show contempt, get defensive, and withdraw are, and those four are visible to an observer long before anyone involved names them.

The patterns transfer intact from the setting they were identified in to a project team, because they are patterns of how humans handle threat rather than anything specific to domestic life.

Delivered to an intact team

This session can be run for a mixed group of managers, but it does more when it is run for a team that actually works together, because they practise on the patterns they actually have. That is also more uncomfortable, and it is agreed with the organization in advance: what will be raised in the room, what will not, and what happens with anything disclosed.

We do not run this as a fix for an active grievance or a harassment complaint. Those need a process, not a workshop, and the session says so explicitly and points to it.
